In Spanish, we have many irregular verbs. Let’s see today verbs with a vowel change in the present tense. Remember that this doesn’t happen neither in the past nor in the future. I made a video explaining this in depth:

E changing for IE: preferir, comenzar, recomendar
Yo prefiero ir al cine, pero mi hermana prefiere escuchar música.
(prefiero, prefieres, prefiere, preferimos, preferís, prefieren)
Yo comienzo a trabajar a las 9, pero mi amiga comienza a las 10.
(comienzo, comienzas, comienza, comenzamos, comenzáis, comienzan)
Yo te recomiendo el restaurante mexicano. ¿Qué me recomiendas tú?
(recomiendo, recomiendas, recomienda, recomendamos, recomendáis, recomiendan)
O changing for UE: volver, mostrar, encontrar
Nosotros volvemos a casa tarde y ellos vuelven temprano.
(vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, volvemos, volvéis, vuelven)
Nosotros te mostramos el jardín y ellos te muestran la cocina.
(muestro, muestras, muestra, mostramos, mostráis, muestran)
Nosotros no encontramos las llaves y ella no encuentra el teléfono.

E changing for I: repetir, competir, servir
La profesora repite los verbos y vosotros repetís el ejercicio.
(repite, repites, repite, repetimos, repetís, repiten)
María compite en una carrera de natación y vosotros competís en una carrera de bicicletas.
(compito, compites, compite, competimos, competís, compiten)
Juana sirve el pollo y vosotros servís las patatas.
(sirvo, sirves, sirve, servimos, servís, sirven)
Here you have a chart with the patterns and also a list with very frequent irregular verbs. Remember that the more you practise, the more you remember. Put the list in a very visible place, like a mirror in the bathroom or the refrigerator door, and several times during the day take one verb, say the whole pattern and study the meaning. It will take you seconds. If you do this consistently day after day, tense by tense, you will master your verbs quickly.
