EPISODIO 10 – Caminando con Maya (Walking with Maya)
Maya y Constance caminan despacio por el parque después del partido.
Maya la mira de reojo y sonríe.
-Parece que te gusta Imran, ¿no?
Constance se ríe, nerviosa.
-No sé… hablamos mucho, y a veces siento algo especial.
Maya and Constance walk slowly through the park after the match.
Maya glances at her and smiles.
-Looks like you like Imran, doesn’t it?
Constance laughs nervously.
-I don’t know… we talk a lot, and sometimes I feel something special.
Maya frunce el ceño, sin maldad.
-Solo piensa bien. Él tiene una familia muy diferente. Me contaste que su madre es muy estricta, ¿no?
-Sí -responde Constance-. Él siempre estudia. Su madre tiene muchas expectativas.
-Exacto. Y tú eres más libre -dice Maya-. Imagina cuando lleguen las vacaciones o una fiesta. Él a menudo está con su familia. ¿Vas a celebrar Ramadán con ellos? ¿Vas a viajar con ellos a Pakistán el próximo verano? ¿Y si no aprueban que salgáis juntos?
Maya frowns, without malice.
-Just think carefully. He has a very different family. You told me his mum is very strict, right?
-Yes -answers Constance-. He always studies. His mum has high expectations.
-Exactly. And you’re more free -says Maya-. Imagine when the holidays or a party come. He often spends that time with his family. Are you going to celebrate Ramadan with them? Are you going to travel with them to Pakistan next summer? And what if they don’t approve of you going out together?
Constance baja la mirada.
-Eso es verdad.
Maya sigue:
-Las diferencias culturales no desaparecen mientras uno está enamorado.
Constance guarda silencio.
Constance looks down.
-That’s true.
Maya continues:
-Cultural differences don’t disappear while you’re in love.
Constance stays quiet.
-No sé qué va a pasar -dice-. Pero no quiero ignorar lo que siento.
Suena su móvil. Es un mensaje de Imran. Constance lo abre, lo lee en silencio. Sus ojos se agrandan.
-¿Qué pasa? -pregunta Maya.
Constance no responde. Mira la pantalla.
-I don’t know what will happen -she says-. But I don’t want to ignore what I feel.
Her phone rings. It’s a message from Imran. Constance opens it, reads in silence. Her eyes widen.
-What’s going on? -asks Maya.
Constance doesn’t answer. She keeps looking at the screen.
GRAMMAR:
In the episode, you can find these examples:
No sé… hablamos mucho, y a veces siento algo especial.
Él siempre estudia.
Él a menudo está con su familia.
In Spanish, there are many useful words to say how often something happens. Learn these:
siempre → always
casi siempre → almost always
todos los días → every day
frecuentemente / a menudo → frequently / often
a veces → sometimes
de vez en cuando → from time to time
casi nunca → almost never
nunca → never
Using these expressions helps you make longer sentences and get higher marks. Look at these examples:
- Instead of “Como un sándwich”, say “Casi siempre como un sándwich, pero a veces como pollo.”
(3 words → 10 words) - Instead of “Nunca juego al tenis”, say “Nunca juego al tenis, pero a menudo juego al baloncesto.”
(4 words → 10 words)
More than double the length, without any extra difficulty. These are the kinds of details that make a difference in your exam.
TIP:

“Cuando” = when
“Mientras” = while
Practise creating sentences with these words:
- Mientras estudio, escucho música. → While I study, I listen to music.
- Mientras como, miro mi serie favorita. → While I eat, I watch my favourite series.
- Cuando termina la clase, hablo con mi amiga. → When the class finishes, I speak with my friend.
- Cuando llego a casa, juego con mi perro. → When I arrive home, I play with my dog.
