32. Future. I am going to do something

Sol icon - Spanish for LondonWe have a proper future, as in English, to say things like “I will travel to Japan”, but in normal conversation, we prefer to say “I am going to travel to Japan”, which is “voy a viajar a Japón”. To form this future, you need:

the verb “to go” (ir) + a + infinitive (the form ending with -ar, -er, -ir)

I am going to swim in the sea. Voy a nadar en el mar.

Now, I will give you examples using time expressions. Here is the vocab:

mañana: tomorrow

pasado mañana: the day after tomorrow

el próximo lunes: next Monday

la próxima semana: next week

el mes próximo: next month

el año próximo: next year

Notice that you can also say “el lunes que viene, la semana que viene, el mes que viene, el año que viene” with the same meaning, because “viene” means “it comes”.

‘Mañana voy a viajar a Tokyo y pasado mañana voy a subir el Monte Fuji. El próximo lunes voy a ir a una pequeña isla llamada Rebun. La próxima semana voy a encontrarme con mi amiga japonesa y vamos a nadar en las aguas termales de Kusatsu Onsen. Luego voy a volver a casa. El mes próximo voy a comenzar la universidad y el año próximo voy a terminar mi curso de japonés’.

‘I am going to travel to Tokyo tomorrow and the day after, I am going to climb Mount Fuji. Next Monday, I am going (to go) to a little island called Rebun. Next week, I am going to meet my Japanese friend and we are going to swim in the thermal waters of Kusatsu Onsen. Then, I am going back home. Next month, I am going to start university and next year, I am going to finish my Japanese course’.
