EPISODIO 7 – Choque en casa (Clash at Home)

Esa noche, Imran vuelve a casa. Todavía recuerda las palabras de Constance en el pasillo. En la mesa, los libros lo esperan. Suspira y se sienta. La madre entra en la sala y lo observa. Imran baja la mirada.

That night, Imran comes back home. Constance’s words in the hallway are still echoing in his mind. On the table, the books are waiting for him. He sighs and sits down. His mother enters the room and watches him. Imran lowers his gaze.

«A veces pienso que estudio para ti, no para mí.»

La madre se cruza de brazos.

“Sometimes I think I study for you, not for me.”

His mother crosses her arms.

«Exacto. Yo no tuve elección. Tú sí. Tu padre trabaja catorce horas. Nosotros trabajamos duro. Vosotros, mis hijos, debéis aprovecharlo. Los demás no te van a regalar nada.»

Imran piensa en su padre, siempre agotado. Se levanta de golpe.

«¿Y si yo no quiero? ¿Y si mi sueño no es tu sueño?»

“Exactly. I had no choice. You do. Your father works fourteen hours. We work hard. You, my children, must take advantage. Others won’t give you anything.”

Imran thinks of his father, always exhausted. He gets to his feet.

“And what if I don’t want to? What if my dream is not your dream?”

GRAMMAR:

«Exacto. Yo no tuve elección. Tú sí. Tu padre trabaja catorce horas. Nosotros trabajamos duro. Vosotros, mis hijos, debéis aprovecharlo. Los demás no te van a regalar nada.»

I will teach you today the Personal Pronouns (I, you, he, she…). Let’s do it with estudiar.

For only one person:

I study Spanish. Yo estudio español.

You study French. estudias francés.

He studies History. Él estudia historia.

She studies English. Ella estudia historia.

For more than one person:

We study Science. Nosotros/nosotras estudiamos ciencias.

You (all or both) study English. Vosotros/vosotras estudiáis inglés.

They study Geography. Ellos/ellas estudian geografía.

Remember that we use nosotros, vosotros, ellos for boys or men, and nosotras, vosotras, ellas for girls or women. And what if the group is made of girls and boys? Well, we use the masculine form, because languages are still sexist. What a shame.

TIP:

«¿Y si yo no quiero? ¿Y si mi sueño no es tu sueño?»

If you want to say what you want to do, simply put quiero + infinitive. Infinitive is an important word, it means the name of the verb, which in Spanish always ends either with AR, ER or IR. Easy.

Quiero jugar a los videojuegos. I want to play videogames.

No quiero hacer los deberes. I don’t want to do the homework.
