Once that you now when to use “ser” and “estar” correctly -but not before-, it’s time to move further and see some adjectives which have two different meanings, according to the verb used with them.
- Abierto:
El banco está abierto. The bank is open.
Carmen es una persona muy abierta. Carmen is a very open-minded person.
- Atento:
Estos estudiantes no están atentos. These students don’t pay attention.
La camarera es muy atenta. The waitress is very helpful.
- Cerrado:
Hoy están las tiendas cerradas. Today, the shops are closed.
Mariana es una mujer completamente cerrada. Mariana is a completely narrow-minded woman.
- Consciente/conciente, inconsciente/inconciente (notice that you can write these words in both ways):
Ha tenido un accidente pero está consciente. He/she had an accident but he is conscious.
Es una persona muy consciente. He/she is a very responsible person.
- Claro:
La cocina es muy clara porque tengo una ventana. The kitchen is very clear because I have one window.
Está claro que no has entendido nada. It is evident that you haven’t understood anything.
- Despierto:
Juancito es un chico muy despierto. Juancito is a very clever boy.
Ahora Francisco está despierto. Now Francisco is awake.
- Dispuesto:
Mi compañero de trabajo es un tipo muy dispuesto. My workmate is a very solicitous person.
¿Estás dispuesto a entrenarte para la carrera? Are you willing to train for the race?
- Interesado:
María no me gusta, es una persona muy interesada. I don’t like Mary, she is a very greedy person.
Estoy francamente interesada en ver esa exposición. I am frankly interested in seeing that exhibition.
- Listo:
Es un estudiante muy listo. He is a very smart student.
Ya está lista la cena. Vamos a comer. Dinner is ready. Let’s go to eat.
- Negro:
El libro que estoy buscando es negro. The book that I am looking for is black.
Estoy negra por lo que has hecho. I am in a bad mood for what you have done.
- Orgulloso:
Estoy orgulloso porque hice un buen trabajo. I am proud of myself because I did a good job.
Eres muy orgullosa, por eso no tienes amigos. You are very arrogant, that’s why you don’t have friends.
- Rico:
El pollo está riquísimo. The chicken is really tasty.
Mucha gente es muy rica en este barrio. A lot of people are very rich in this neighbourhood.
- Seguro:
Estoy segura de que mi teléfono estaba sobre la mesa. I am sure that my phone was on the table.
No camines en esa zona, no es seguro. Don’t walk in that area, it is not safe.
- Verde:
Este asunto está verde. Tenemos que pensarlo. This question is unripe. We have to think about it.
Mi auto no es verde. My car is not green.
- Violento:
Es una situación violenta. It is an awkward situation.
Él es un hombre violento y peligroso. He is a violent and dangerous man.
