15. Personal Pronouns

Castañuelas icon - Spanish for LondonI created a video where I explain all about these little words to say “I, you, he, she, we, you, they”. However, I will explain a little more in depth about the “you” form. Remember that English is an exception, because we say “you” in any context. Compare this:

YOU are my friend. eres mi amigo. Informal singular.

YOU are my teacher. USTED es mi profesor. Formal singular.

YOU are my friends. VOSOTROS sois mis amigos. Informal plural.

YOU are my teachers. USTEDES son mis profesores. Formal plural.

As you see, we have four different forms to say “you”. But unfortunately, this is a little more complicated, because we speak Spanish in many countries, and even in Spain, we don’t say things in the same way. For example, the informal plural “vosotros, vosotras” is frequently used in the North and the center of the country, but in Andalucia, which is in the South, we prefer to use “ustedes”. And in many Latin American countries, the form “tú” doesn’t exist or alternates with another pronoun, “vos”. In Argentina, for example, nobody uses “tú”, so you need to be aware of this fact.
