2. Possessives in Spanish

Paella icon - Spanish for LondonLet’s talk about possession. To do this, we use little words like my, your, his, her, etc. It’s the same in Spanish, but you need to consider if you have one or more than one item. Examples:

My dog: mi perro                   My dogs: miS perroS

Another interesting difference is that in English, we distinguish between his and her, but in Spanish, we use the same form, su (or sus, when it’s more than one item), for both. So:

His dog is black: su perro es negro.               His dogs are black: sus perros son negros.

Her cat is white: su gato es blanco.              Her cats are white: sus gatos son blancos.

Sometimes, this could be confusing. When this happens, we can say Mary’s cat (el gato de María), or John’s dog (el perro de Juan).

I will show you now the whole pattern:

Mi perro: my dog                               Mis perros: my dogs

Tu perro: your dog                             Tus perros: your dogs

Su perro: his dog                                Sus perros: his dogs

Su perro: her dog                                Sus perros: her dogs

Nuestro perro: our dog                      Nuestros perros: our dogs

Vuestro perro: your dog                    Vuestros perros: your dogs

Su perro: their dog                             Sus perros: their dogs

As you see, we also use su, sus for their. But again, if this is confusing, we can say, for example, my friends’ dog (el perro de mis amigos). Another distinction: the word with an accent means you, but the word tu without an accent is your. That’s why accents are relevant in Spanish. Examples:

y tu perro no pueden entrar en mi casa. You and your dog cannot enter my house.

Also consider that there are two forms, nuestro and vuestro, which could also be feminine. Example:

Nuestro hijo estudia biología, pero nuestra hija estudia sociología.

Our son studies Biology, but our daughter studies Sociology.

Vuestro dormitorio es blanco, pero vuestra cocina es amarilla.

Your bedroom is white, but your kitchen is yellow.

Finally, we also have forms like “mine, yours, his, hers” and the like. I show you the pattern:

Mine: El perro es mío. Los perros son míos. La gata es mía. Las gatas son mías.

Yours: El perro es tuyo. Los perros son tuyos. La gata es tuya. Las gatas son tuyas.

Yours formal, his, hers, its: El perro es suyo. Los perros son suyos. La gata es suya. Las gatas son suyas.

Ours: El perro es nuestro. Los perros son nuestros. La gata es nuestra. Las gatas son nuestras.

Yours: El perro es vuestro. Los perros son vuestros. La gata es vuestra. Las gatas son vuestras.

Yours formal, theirs: El perro es suyo. Los perros son suyos. La gata es suya. Las gatas son suyas.
