17. Reflexive Verbs

Learn Spanish through its Verbal SystemThis is a very short blog, because everything is explained in the video. The topic is Reflexive Verbs, which is a group of verbs where the subject of the sentence reflects the grammatical object, as a mirror reflecting an image. They are very easy, but we don’t have this structure in English, so it is something new for you. By the way, you need to know what is a subject and what is an object in grammar, not only to understand Reflexive Verbs, but also for many other topics. Let’s have a look:

María come la pizza.

“María” is performing the verbal action, so she is the grammatical subject. The subject is the word or group of words related to the person, or animal, or group or anything that is performing the verbal action. It is not necessarily a person.

El tren pasa por la estación.

“El tren” is performing the verbal action of passing through the station, so it is the subject.

Going back to María, now “la pizza” is the direct object, which in grammar means the word or group of words related to the person, or animal, or group or anything that is receiving the verbal action. The pizza is eaten, so it receives the action of being eaten.

Does it make sense? Be sure that you understood this, it is very basic but really important. So, when we say:

Yo me baño. I bathe myself.

We have a Reflexive Verb here, because the subject “yo” is reflecting the direct object “me”. In other words, “yo” and “me” are the same person. The person who performs the action is doing something to himself or herself. It is the same person at both sides of the mirror.
